Yamanote Line Sign

The Sounds of the Yamanote Line

Anyone whose moved in and around the metropolitan Tokyo area in Japan has unquestionably done so without seeking the crucial assistance of the legendary Yamanote Line, Tokyo's marquee rail transit service operated by JR East. A 30 station loop featuring stops in world famous destinations like Shinagawa, Shibuya, Shinjuku and Ueno among many others, the Yamanote Line is synonymous with the city which it's served for over 100 years.

Beyond its historic legacy, the line is known by many of its patrons for its one of a kind branding through its use of unique station jingles to indicate each designated stop. For longtime riders, these tunes are all they need to know exactly where they are at any given point. And for those who've used the line for vacation or other trips, the jingles resonate as a pleasing nostalgic quirk to their overall experience in the city.

In this video posted by the YouTube channel FunVideo, you can simulate what it's like to ride the Yamanote line, or reminisce about your time travelling on it, right from the comfort of where you currently sit.
